Ross Grappling Club
Welcome to RUSM’s very own grappling club! As facilitators, we bring to the table a variety of experience, styles, and affiliations. However, we all share a passion for grappling, development of technique, and instruction.
CLASSES:
Ross Gym- Spin Room: EVERY Tuesday & Thursday: 7:30 - 9:00 pm
CLASS FORMAT:
First 15 minutes: Stretching & Warm-up:
- Grappling is a very fluid and dynamic activity in which many of you will be using muscles that you may not be used to using. It is therefore essential that participants warm-up sufficiently before taking part.
Next 30 minutes: Technique Instruction:
- We will demonstrate 2 or 3 techniques in each class, provide time for participants to drill them, then observe and make any corrections/suggestions accordingly.
Final 45 minutes: Live Training/Sparring
- Sparring (AKA rolling) will be conducted in timed rounds under close observation by one of the instructors. This will be the ideal time to apply the techniques learned in class to a real life, resisting opponent.
RULES:
No Slamming-
Safety and physical enrichment are absolute priorities for Ross Grappling. The mats we are working with are not thick enough to safely carry out slams or takedowns. All sparring sessions will start from the knees (if you do not know what this refers to, we will show you).
No small digit manipulation (no grabbing or cranking of individual fingers or toes)
No Leg Locks or Knee Bars
No punching, kicking, elbowing, kneeing, eye gouging, fish hooking, etc while grappling
APPROPRIATE ATTIRE/GEAR:
We will not be practicing in a gi. Participants should wear comfortable workout clothing, typically a t-shirt and shorts. If you own a compression shirt or rash guard, this would be even more ideal. Mouth pieces and protective cups can be worn at your own discretion but are not required. Participants should remove any jewelry and tie back any long hair before participating. Finger and toe nails should be clean and trimmed. As with any contact sport, your personal hygiene is expected and greatly appreciated.
